Before the barbeques and fireworks begin, kick off the USA’s birthday celebration at the 20th Annual Fourth of July 5K Run/Walk & Firecracker Dash sponsored by the Village Runner. This very popular local event gets underway at 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 4th in front of the Village Runner store in Riviera Village. The route starts on Catalina Avenue and heads north three blocks to Avenue I for a left turn west to the Esplanade. The course continues north to Torrance Boulevard for a U-turn to retrace the route back to the finish line. All participants will receive a 4th of July Run t-shirt. There will be chip timing, water stations, sponsored refreshments, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K run. Don’t forget the annual G.I. Joe Bootcamp Push-up Challenge! If you plan to compete, be there by 9:15 a.m. The last man, woman or child standing will receive a $1,000 prize! The El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department proudly presents the Fourth of July Community Celebration and Fireworks Spectacular on Thursday, July 4th. The celebration is an all-day event with activities for the entire family and takes place in Recreation Park located at 401 East Sheldon Street. The fun gets underway at 10 a.m. with a Hula Hoop contest, water balloon toss, sack races and more. The El Segundo Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a pie eating contest at 1:30 p.m. followed by a watermelon eating contest at 2:15 p.m. sponsored by the El Segundo Rotary Club. Proceeds from the food and snack booths will benefit local community and school groups. Enjoy live music at the softball field from 5 to 7 p.m. The music continues at Stevenson Field from 7 to 9 p.m. The fireworks show sponsored by Chevron blasts off at 9 p.m. with expanded seating opportunities including general admission, senior citizen and resident priority seating. The 7th Annual Redondo Beach Community Celebration & Fireworks Show gets underway at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 4th at the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. There will be free paddle boarding lessons, arts & crafts, a parade and obstacle course for the kids, live music for the adults and food for everyone. There will be several dining options to choose from: BBQ chicken and tri-tip plates, sandwiches and salads, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cake, Italian Ice, kids snacks, coffee, hot chocolate and a wide selection from Ruby’s Diner service window on the lagoon. No food or beverage is allowed to be brought in. None. The fireworks start at 9 p.m. so plan to make a full day of it. Dedicated shuttle service to and from the Seaside Lagoon will be available for ticket holders from 1:30 to 11 p.m. The parking garage is located at 415 Diamond Street. The privately funded, Torrance Beach Fireworks Show is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. but Ms. Briles usually waits to begin her show until all the other coastal shows are finished. There’s plenty of prime viewing along the Esplanade and beach but parking and traffic are a NIGHTMARE and it can take upwards of two hours to get out of the area after the show – I’m not exaggerating. So if you can, walk or ride bikes.
The City of Palos Verdes Estates proudly presents An Old-Fashioned Fourth of July on Thursday, July 4th beginning at 9:30 a.m. Now in its 52nd year, this free community event is a favorite with locals and visitors alike. If you plan to take part in the Apple Pie Contest, you should arrive early to submit your entry. Children are encouraged to decorate their bicycles in red, white and blue and participate in the Patriotic Bicycle Parade. Join the City of Rancho Palos Verdes this Fourth of July as they celebrate two historic birthdays! The USA turns 237 years old and the City of Rancho Palos Verdes will be 40 this year. In honor of the City’s milestone, this year’s July 4th Independence Day Celebration will have live entertainment, food booths, a petting zoo, kiddie carnival rides, games, arts and crafts, pie eating and hula hoop contests and much, much more! The event will take place at Point Vicente Park and RPV Civic Center and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free and complimentary shuttle service along Hawthorne Boulevard will be provided. The Redondo Beach Pier Association presents the Summer of Music Concert Series every Thursday and Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. starting this Saturday, July 6. These concerts are free to the public, so gather your family, friends and neighbors for a casual, relaxing evening of entertainment the South Bay way. The Redondo Beach Pier is located at 100 Fisherman’s Wharf at the western-most end of Torrance Boulevard in Redondo Beach. Chevron is proud to sponsor the 52nd Annual Manhattan Beach 2013 Grand Prix. This world class cycling event takes place Sunday, July 7 at Live Oak Park from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come out and watch the world’s fastest men and women cyclists put the pedal to the metal! The main event features men and women’s pro races but there’s something for everyone, including a special race for the kids with medals for everyone! Tricycles and bikes with training wheels are welcome (ages 2 through 6 years). The entry fee is $5 per rider and registration starts at noon on race day at the ball field north of the Joslyn Center. All participants must sign a release form at registration. The Manhattan Beach Grand Prix is a National Criterium Calendar Event with a cash purse worth $26,500. There will be vendor booths offering a wide variety of cycling merchandise, nutritional exhibits and local organizations. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park Series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on select Sunday evenings at Library Park located at the 600 block of Main Street in beautiful downtown El Segundo. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the music starting at 4:30 and running until 6 p.m. This Sunday, July 7, features The Trip, a rock & roll cover band. Local food vendors will be on hand and kids can stop by the gazebo for free face painting and arts and crafts provided by Camp Cowabungo Day Camp. The Malaga Cove Business & Professional Association, in cooperation with the Palos Verde Police Officers Association, is proud to present Concerts in the Park 2013. The concerts will take place every Wednesday night, beginning July 10 and running through August 28, at Farham Martin’s Park, adjacent to the Malaga Cove Library. The music starts at 7 p.m. but concert goers may arrive at the park as early as 3 p.m. to spread a blanket and claim a prime parking spot. Bad Haggis, an Electric Celtic Rock band, will be performing next Wednesday, July 10. This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of All’s Well That Ends Well and King John will take place during July and the first week in August. The first performance of King John takes place in Rancho Palos Verdes at Terrenea Resort, located at 100 Terrenea Way, on Thursday, July 11 @ 7 p.m. No outside food will be permitted. Food and beverages will be available for purchase onsite. Onsite parking is $5.
