Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for October 24, 2013

Halloween is still a week away but there are plenty of spooky events scheduled this weekend - including several for our four-legged, tail-wagging friends.

Doma Kitchen is hosting An Evening for Breast Cancer Awareness to benefit Walk With Sally tonight, Thursday, October 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. Guests will enjoy drinks by Deep Eddy Vodka, live music, a silent art auction and delectable bites provided by Doma Kitchen. The artwork will be displayed in the courtyard of Doma Kitchen until November 8 and the artists will donate a portion of their earnings to Walk With Sally. Doma Kitchen will have an assortment of food options for purchase, including a Pink Ribbon Pastry of which 100% of the profits will go to Walk With Sally. The Redondo Beach Historical Society and Spectrum Catering present a Haunted Halloween Family Event on Thursday, October 24, in the historic Old Library at Veterans Park. Activities include a tour of the Library, a costume contest, popcorn and soft drinks and a screening of the 1931 classic film, Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for check-in, the library tour begins at 6:45, the costume contest starts at 7:15 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. This event is free to the public and attendees are requested to RSVP at RBHSevent@gmail.com. This Friday is the last Cruise at the Beach for the season!  Stop by and check out  the fabulous vintage automobiles on display in the Ruby’s Diner parking lot from 4 to 8 p.m. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their hot rods, street rods and muscle cars and strut their stuff. The evening also features trivia, trophies and raffle. Ruby’s Diner is located at 245 North Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. Pug Nation Rescue of LA presents Pugtacular on Saturday, October 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Torrance Park. The annual event is a fun way to bring awareness about Pug Nation while raising funds to support their cause. Dog lovers can enter their four-legged friends in the costume contest, enjoy a little BBQ, learn what adopting a dog entails and shop for pet-friendly products. Berry Bly and Max Entertainment Group are proud to present South Bay Scream Halloween Party on Friday, October 25 at The Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club. The celebration includes multiple dance floors, performance artists, tarot readers, scary creatures, lighting and visual effects, smoking patio, valet parking and much more. The event features a costume parade and contest with prizes awarded for both big dogs and small in the following categories: Funniest, Scariest and Judges Choice. There will be a silent auction, demos and merchandise for sale from local vendors. Professional event photos will be available and printed while you wait for $5. Make your dog paws-itively happy by joining Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach for the ninth annual Fido & Friends Walk to support cancer patients and their families. The fun-filled event takes place on Saturday, October 26 at Terranea Resort. The Walk will start at Pelican Cove Park located at 31300 Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes and finish at Terranea. On-site registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. Guests and their dogs will receive a free T-shirt and a fabulous doggie goodie bag. Other festivities will include doggie contests, vendor booths and a beer garden, and prizes will be given to the top fundraisers. Attendees must raise $50 or more in pledges to participate. If you’re a fan of the Man in Black, I hear this is a terrific show…..The Norris Center presents a Johnny Cash Tribute on Saturday, October 26. Rockabilly Hall of Famer, Rusty Evan, and his band, Ring of Fire, recreate the music of country music icon, Johnny Cash. Lending his own touch to such famous songs as Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue, Jackson and I Walk the Line, Rusty honors the legendary Man in Black with soulful honesty and exuberance. The Lunada Bay Homeowners Association hosts the annual Harvest Festival on Sunday, October 27 at Lunada Bay Plaza. It’s a fun-filled afternoon for the whole family and the kids will keep busy on the bungee jump, moon bounce and obstacle course. Support local education and children with special needs by signing up for the annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. The City of Manhattan Beach Parks & Recreation Department, LA Car Guy and Skechers proudly present the 23 Annual Pumpkin Race from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 27 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. This national award-winning event is a favorite with locals and has been a Beach Cities tradition since 1990. Anyone can enter the race and Pumpkin Racecar kits are available for $20 at the Live Oak Park Tennis Office while supplies last. The race is fun, easy and free to enter! No registration is required and costumes are encouraged. Compete in single elimination Open Qualifying from noon to 4 p.m. for your chance to race in the Championship Finals beginning at 4 p.m. If you don’t feel the need for speed, there will be plenty of other activities on the schedule including train rides, Gordy the Pumpkin Racecar, arts and crafts, Pumpkinrace Land and a 40 foot wave. An awards ceremony takes place immediately following the finals with prizes awarded for Best of Show, Best Team Spirit, Best Crash and the coveted Championship Trophy. The Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo will be screening Classic Horror Movies throughout the month of October. Since 1968, the Old Town Music Hall has been showing vintage silent and sound films and presenting live concerts by some of the world’s finest performers of jazz, ragtime and popular music from the past. Scheduled screenings include: The Black Cat, Nosferatu, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Silent films are accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer, a massive 1925 wind-powered pipe organ that has been meticulously preserved so that silent classics can be experienced with live musical accompaniment, just as they did when they were first shown.
