Program Helps Redondo Kids 'LiveWell'

The Beach Cities Health District's LiveWell Kids program encourages elementary students to develop healthy habits.

isn't only about the Healthways-Blue Zones Vitality City program—it has encouraged people to live healthier since 1955 through programs like the Center for Health and Fitness, Center for Health Connection, GrowWell, and Hooked on Health.

One of its programs, LiveWell Kids, was recently profiled in the Easy Reader. According to reporter Chelsea Sektnan, the program "has increased the amount of student physical activity, improved knowledge and behaviors regarding healthy eating, increased access to healthy foods and provided parents with nutritional knowledge" in elementary schools since its inception in 2004.

In the past five years, students' body mass levels have decreased 5.1 percent.

According to the BCHD website, about 1,200 seed packets were planted in gardens at the school. So far, the gardens have been harvested three times and  students participating in the program have been able to sample vegetables they grew themselves.

More than 4,100 students are involved in the LiveWell Kids program.
