Services Set for Man Who Died in Triathlon

Michael Giardino died Sunday after the swimming leg of the Redondo Beach Triathlon.

The memorial service for the man who died during the Redondo Beach Triathlon last Sunday morning will take place Tuesday, according to an email from his son.

San Pedro Michael Charles Giardino, 48, died after being transported to Providence Little Company of Mary in Torrance. He had stumbled out of the water and collapsed after competing in the swim leg of the sprint triathlon.

A visitation is scheduled at McNerney's Mortuary, located at 570 W. Fifth St. in San Pedro, from 5-8 p.m. Monday. The funeral service will be at Mary Star of the Sea Parish at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, and Giardino will be buried at Green Hills Memorial Park. A reception in his honor will follow at the Elks Lodge in San Pedro.

Born April 16, 1965 to Matthew and Sharon Giardino in Rochester, N.Y., Michael Giardino moved to San Pedro when he was young. He graduated from Mary Star of the Sea High School in 1983 and worked as a pasteurizer at Swiss Dairy for 21 years.

He also married his high school sweetheart, Tammy Giardino, on July 4, 1995.

"He loved his family and his friends more than anything, and he would stop at nothing to always make sure they were happy," the family said in a statement. "He enjoyed running, bike riding, swimming, fishing, horse racing, golfing and being the life of the party."

He is survived by his wife, Tammy; mother Sharon Giardino of Murrieta; son, Andrew Giardino of San Pedro; daughter, Amanda (Michael) Salter of Forest Falls; granddaughter Jett; sisters Francine Giardino of Murrieta and Melesssa (Dale) Austin of Huntington Beach; nephews Robert Salazar, Stephen Giardino, Steven Blasing, Ryan Giardino and Troy Blasing; and nieces Elizabeth and Angelica Salazar, along with several cousins.
