UPDATE: 2 Arrested After South Redondo Shooting

The shooting occurred on Wednesday just after midnight, police said.

Two people were arrested early Wednesday morning after a gun went off in an apartment in the 500 bock of the Esplanade, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

The shooting, in which alcohol may have been a factor, occurred at about 12:50 p.m., Sgt. Fabian Saucedo told Patch.

"It's still actively being investigated, but at this time, we believe it may have been accidental," Saucedo said.

Redondo Beach resident Ronald Barker, 43, was arguing with his girlfriend—identified as Karen Benjestorf, 37, of Rolling Hills Estates—when she picked up a gun and fired it into the ground, according to Saucedo. The bullet shattered, sending fragments flying. Some of the fragments hit Barker's face.

Paramedics transported Barker to the hospital, where he was treated, Saucedo said. He was later returned to the station and booked into jail on suspicion of battery. He posted his $20,000 bail on Wednesday.

Police aren't sure if Benjestorf knew if the gun was real when she fired it, Saucedo said.

Benjestorf was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm. Her bail, which she posted, was set at $35,000.

The investigation is ongoing.
