Suspect to Stand Trial in Double Homicide
Jonathan Chacon is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Courtney Bergman and her mother, Vicki Bergman, on Feb. 29, 2012.
The man accused of killing a Redondo Beach woman and her teenage daughter in February 2012 will stand trial on two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, a judge ruled Thursday as reported by the Beach Reporter.
Jonathan Scott Chacon, 25, is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Courtney Bergman, 19, and her mother, Vicki Bergman, 59, with a knife in their home on Rockefeller Lane in North Redondo Beach.
The slayings led to a manhunt for Chacon, who police quickly identified as a suspect. He was found within 24 hours in Mexico and brought back to the United States the next day.
At the end of Thursday's preliminary hearing, Judge Hector Guzman ruled that enough evidence exists to hold Chacon for trial, according to the newspaper.
If convicted of the two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, Chacon faces life in prison without parole. Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty, according to reporter Larry Altman.
